Ingredients

  • 1 large French loaf
  • Garlic butter
  • Kasi hot and spicy flavoured sauce
  • Masala steak (thinly sliced)
  • Caramelised onions
  • Gherkins (sliced)
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Masala chips (spicy fries)
  • Cheddar cheese (grated or sliced)
  • Sriracha sauce

Instructions

  1. Prep the French Loaf:

    - Cut the large French loaf in half lengthwise.
    - Spread garlic butter generously on the inside of both halves.

  2. Toast the Loaf:
    - Preheat the grill.
    - Toast the garlic-buttered sides of the French loaf until they’re golden and crispy. Set aside

  3. Braai the Masala Steak:
    - Braai the masala steak, to your desired level of doneness.
    - Ensure it’s well-coated with spices, and let it develop a slight char.
    - Once done, remove from heat and slice the steak into strips.

  4. Make the Masala Chips:
    - Fry the chips until golden and crispy.
    - Toss the fried chips in a masala spice mix for extra flavour.

  5. Caramelise the Onions:
    - In a separate pan, sauté onions with a bit of oil until they become soft, sweet, and caramelised.

  6. Assemble the Gatsby:
    - Spread Kasi hot and spicy sauce on the bottom half of the French loaf.
    - Layer the masala steak strips evenly over the sauce.
    - Add a layer of caramelised onions.
    - Top with shredded lettuce for some crunch.
    - Add a few slices of gherkins for a tangy bite.

  7. Add the Chips and Cheese:
    - Layer the masala chips on top of the steak, lettuce, and gherkins.
    - Sprinkle a generous amount of cheddar cheese over the chips.

  8. Drizzle with Sriracha:
    - Drizzle Sriracha sauce over the cheese for an extra kick of heat.

  9. Final Touches:
    - Place the top half of the French loaf on the sandwich and press it down gently.
    - Slice the Gatsby into individual portions, depending on how large you want the servings.

  10. Serve and Enjoy:
    - Serve immediately while it’s hot and fresh!
